“The road no longer belonged to the cows.”

This sentence, from the opening paragraphs of Tuck Everlasting, has become a staple in my close reading workshops with teachers.

But as we discover together, the cows have very little at stake. Instead, it is the people who suffer the consequences.

Let me explain.

The workshop centers on deciphering the setting of the opening paragraphs of Tuck Everlasting, where the road into the fictional village of Treegap was “trod out long before by a herd of cows who were, to say the least, relaxed.” The road wanders, sways, ambles, widens, and pauses. Its edges blur. It suggests “tranquil bovine picnics” and “thoughtful contemplation of the infinite.”

At first, Babbitt’s road “belongs” to the cows, and everything about it feels relaxed, slow-moving, and easy.

But then, something changes.

By the end of the passage, we have a road, a wood, a house, a jailhouse and… the gallows. In only a few sentences, the tone has shifted from a sense of comfort and ease to something darker and more forbidding.

It is a remarkable opening. And it is also a useful reminder: rigor doesn’t only hide in the texts with the highest Lexile scores.

In the workshop, I have teachers read the passage three times.

The first read is for the flow of the text, the literal setting, and the vocabulary students need in order to keep reading. Words like ambled, bovine, veered, quick, and gallows are not treated as incidental, rather they are noticed, defined, and made part of the reading work.

The second read asks teachers to scan for patterns. What words give the road a personality? What verbs are attached to its movement? How does the description of the first paragraph differ from the second? Where does the tone shift?

The third read moves line by line into authorial choice. Why does Babbitt write that the road “veered sharply” rather than simply turned? What does it mean for the road to become “property”? Why does the fence seem “capable”? Why mention the jailhouse and the gallows, but not the bank, the school, or the park?

Across those three reads, teachers write more than once.

The first prompt is fairly straightforward: What is the setting of the house in the opening paragraphs of Tuck Everlasting?

By the end, the task has become more demanding: How does Babbitt use a shift in tone to establish the setting of the house?

By the time teachers reach the final writing prompt, they have not merely discussed or reread the passage. They have studied how the language and structure of the passage reveal the scene’s foreshadowing, and their writing begins to reflect more of the world Babbitt has built: the pressure of ownership, the contrast between nature and people, and the warning signs embedded in the setting.

This all matters because close reading is the methodical breaking down of the language and structure of a complex passage to establish and analyze its meaning. Teaching students to do this requires layered reading, sequenced text-dependent questions, and, whenever possible, mastery expressed through writing.

In my workshops, teachers don’t just hear about close reading: they experience a model close read, debrief the demands it places on readers, and then return to the texts and curriculum they are already using to plan. From there, they identify a hinge moment in an upcoming unit and begin building a close reading sequence they can actually use with students.

The experience is rigorous, practical, and experience-forward. More importantly, it shapes how teachers think about preparation itself: planning becomes the careful study of what a text has to offer, and instruction becomes the work of helping students meet that complexity with confidence.

In my experience, fall is the best time for this work. Before the first weeks of school scatter everyone’s attention, teachers can enter the year with a clearer process for planning, reading, annotating, and writing from complex texts, making the most of the instructional materials they already use.
